CHEMISTRY OF NATURAL PRODUCTS DIVISION
The division's mission is to develop projects in the area of Chemistry of Natural Products for both academia and industry, with a focus on basic, technological and innovative research, including in a pilot scale. Its main lines of research involve traditional and instrumental phytochemistry, such as countercurrent chromatography with the aim of fractionating and purifying extracts, isolating new molecules from medicinal and aromatic plants. In addition, it develops classic and alternative formulations in the most different areas such as veterinary, food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, having the micro- and nanoencapsulation (spray and freeze drying) of compounds of interest as highlights. The division also keeps partnerships in teaching activities, courses, workshops and training, advises external projects and provides services in different areas. It currently has a team composed by researchers, students and fellows.
LINES OF RESEARCH
- Quantification of markers in natural and/or synthetic products;
- Characterization of essential oils;
- Fractionation of extracts by chromatographic techniques (TLC, GC, Column chromatography, Medium pressure, HSCCC);
- Isolation of active compounds from herbs using chromatographic techniques;
- Development of analytical methodology for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and household cleaning industries;
- Pharmacopoeial analysis and development of monographs for plant and derivatives;
- Courses, workshops and training.
ON-DEMAND SEARCH
- Chemistry of Natural Products;
- Development of polymeric films, nano and microcapsules;
- Galenic development and pharmaceutical technology of herbal medicines and phytomedicines;
- Studies of natural surfactants from plants and microorganisms;
- Use of liquid-liquid extraction (countercurrent chromatography, HSCCC) for isolation of bioactive compounds;
- Development and optimization of processes on a pilot scale (milling processes in different scales, extraction at room temperature and heating/mixing, filtration and concentration in a rotaevaporator-50 L, and Column chromatography with different adsorbents).
